When applying to work in a bank, your credit score will often be checked to ensure you are not entering into the job for dishonest reasons. You must also have a clear criminal record and may be required to provide a CRB enhanced disclosure at the expense of the employer.
Maths and accounting qualifications will help you to progress or enter at higher levels within a bank, but most banks provide full training for their staff. Other qualifications that might help are economics or management.
You will have to be confident handling cash, so experience of this or working in a retail environment is desirable. The minimum qualification varies between different companies, but many will expect A levels. Some may accept GCSE’s if graded above C.
Some sales experience is useful, as you will need to refer, recommend and sell products such as credit cards, loans or insurance to your customers.
Cashiers are often the first, and sometimes the only contact a customer will have with their bank on a regular basis, so it is important you can be friendly and approachable and provide dazzling customer service to every customer who comes through the door. If you can’t, customers may consider you to be providing bad service and you can lose their accounts to a competitor.

Dear Mr Brown
I am writing to express my interest in the Bank Cashier position with your company that I saw advertised in the Anytown Chronicle.
At present I am working in (job) but unfortunately there is limited progression in what I do and I am looking for a new challenge which will allow me to make a career from it with options to progress in the future. I think I would make an excellent cashier as I am friendly, smart and approachable and I am confident speaking to customers thanks to my experience in retail. I also have experience of selling and recommending, which I think will come in helpful when selling your bank’s products to banking customers.
I have enclosed a copy of my CV detailing my relevant work experience, achievements and qualifications for you to peruse. I would be willing to attend an interview with 72 hours’ notice, and I have a two-week notice period to observe with my current employer should my application progress to employment.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kindest regards
Jane Smith
