People working in IT need to have high levels of analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to work well under pressure and to strict deadlines. The world of IT is constantly changing so it is important to keep abreast of new developments and retain up to date qualifications. You will need a good standard of maths to get into IT and strong communication skills are important as you may be working with a wide range of different people every day. Formal qualifications that are recognised by companies like Apple and Microsoft are important, but for those just starting out in their careers on the job training and apprenticeships schemes are available.
