As the receptionist, you will be the first point of contact for anyone wishing to get in touch with the company, and anyone who comes through the door. With this in mind, you should dress presentably, be well-groomed, polite, friendly and efficient.
Convey this at interview.
You may be asked to work alongside the existing receptionist to demonstrate your skills as part of an interview. Suggest that you would be willing to do so to show initiative.
Talk about your experience of office tasks. Receptionists will not usually just be tied to a desk. You may be asked to help with writing letters, preparing documents or contacting external people or agencies to make arrangements. Your buzzwords are flexible and versatile.
Experience isn’t always necessary, although it does help so draw on whatever you can in order to support your application.
Organisation is key, so it can be helpful if you can include an example of your organisational skills in your cover letter. Did you overhaul the appointments system? Have you done something innovative in your current role that helped everyone else to be more organised? Throw it out there for them to think about. Even as a receptionist, your creativity and innovation will be welcomed.

Dear Mr Brown
I am writing to express my interest in the Receptionist role I saw advertised in the Anytown Chronicle.
I currently work as an administration assistant for my current employer, which I have done for around four years. While I love my job, I am looking to progress to something new. As a receptionist, I would enjoy the interaction with people, which I do not get at present. I am very comfortable using a telephone and I am also very organised and efficient. I have experience of all kinds of office and administration tasks and find that moving to a receptionist role is just a natural progression for me at this stage. I am also computer literate and a fast typist.
I have enclosed a copy of my CV detailing my work experience and qualifications for your perusal. I would be willing to attend an interview at short notice, and I have a four-week notice period to observe with my current employer should things progress.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kindest regards
Jane Smith
