Work Samples
A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Modern Japanese Studies at the University of Oxford.
This paper investigates the manner in which the motivations and interests of the four agents – mourners, deceased, Buddhist monks and undertakers – intertwine to trigger a peculiar market situation in contemporary Japan: the excessive cost of funerary services. In order to understand this phenomenon, this paper focuses on the intangible exchange which takes place between the bereaved and the deceased. It examines how Buddhist priests, making instrumental use of the notion of death pollution and ambiguity, take advantage of their role in this exchange and, consequently, gain control over the creation and perpetuation of a certain convention. It also explores the ways in which mourners take advantage of this convention and turn it into an opportunity for the accumulation and consumption of social status. Finally, the paper describes the way the funeral professionals, under the aegis of taboo concerning death in Japan, run their businesses completely unrestrained by any regulations.
